Different species are recorded using either their scientific name or their common name. Sometimes they are recorded using both. To find a species name, follow the steps outlined below:

On the left-hand menu, under database click on thesaurus. You will be taken to the thesaurus page. Click on the link Species Names. You will be presented with a form similar to the one shown below.

You can search for a species name using one of three different searches:

1. If you have a rough idea of what you are looking for, type in a keyword such as 'Squirrel' in the Keyword text box. Click on the search button. The different names used for recording squirrels will be shown. You can cross reference the scientific names with the common names where they exist.

2. If you do not know exactly what you are looking for you can search for a species scientific name alphabetically. Under List all scientific names beginning with: choose a letter you would like the names to begin with from the menu (e.g. a). Click on the search button. All scientific names begging with that letter (e.g. a) will be shown.

3. If you do not know exactly what you are looking for you can search for a species common name alphabetically. Under List all comon names beginning with: choose a letter you would like the names to begin with from the menu (e.g. a). Click on the search button. All common names begging with that letter (e.g. a) will be shown.
