Different
species are recorded using either their scientific name or their
common name. Sometimes they are recorded using both. To find a species
name, follow the steps outlined below:
On
the left-hand menu, under database click on thesaurus.
You will be taken to the thesaurus page. Click on the link Species
Names. You will be presented with a form similar to the one
shown below.

You
can search for a species name using one of three different searches:
1.
If you have a rough idea of what you are looking for, type in a
keyword such as 'Squirrel' in the Keyword text box. Click
on the search button. The different names used for recording
squirrels will be shown. You can cross reference the scientific
names with the common names where they exist.
2.
If you do not know exactly what you are looking for you can search
for a species scientific name alphabetically. Under List all
scientific names beginning with: choose a letter you would like
the names to begin with from the menu (e.g. a). Click on the search
button. All scientific names begging with that letter (e.g.
a) will be shown.
3.
If you do not know exactly what you are looking for you can search
for a species common name alphabetically. Under List all comon
names beginning with: choose a letter you would like the names
to begin with from the menu (e.g. a). Click on the search button.
All common names begging with that letter (e.g. a) will be shown.
