This is a female Clarke's Mining Bee, Andrena clarkella, seen recently at Inchgarth, Aberdeen by the River Dee. Note the female's orange back legs and feet (tibiae and tarsi). It is one of the earliest mining bees to be active in NE Scotland and will mine small burrows on bare or sparsely vegetated ground. It will visit willow catkins just now to find pollen. We don't receive many records of this species but it is probably under-recorded so do keep an eye out for it just now and let us know where and when you find one. Thanks to Ian Broadbent for this great photo and for the record details. ... See MoreSee Less
